About Membership
WAYS provides an opportunity for talented Western Australian primary school string students to play together in a strings orchestra.
Members are Year 5 to 7 students drawn from primary schools throughout Perth. Rehearsals and concerts aim for music education and fun. The Orchestra performs at least five times a year, including at Government House.
The Orchestra is under the musical direction of internationally renowned Mr Ashley Arbuckle and provides a great pathway to further orchestral and musical opportunities. Many members of WAYS have achieved music and academic scholarships to schools such as Churchlands Senior High School, Perth Modern and many of Perths private schools. Members also have the opportunity to develop friendships with children of the same age and interests.
Rehearsals are held in the Churchlands Senior High School auditorium on a Wednesday evening between 4:15pm and 6:15pm. Full attendance is necessary.
Members of WAYS are selected through an audition process. Candidates should be capable of playing the violin, viola, cello or bass to level 2 AMEB or higher. (However, some members are playing at levels up to AMEB 6 or equivalent Suzuki Books).
Members need to be able to read music and be actively studying with a music teacher either at school or privately.
