Music Director and Conductor - Mr Ashley Arbuckle

Ashley Arbuckle started as WAYS Music Director in 2007. WAYS has been fortunate in retaining him as he has a great deal of expertise and experience to offer WAYS members.

Ashley studied Music and Composition at the University of Western Australia. He graduated in 1964, and immediately earned a position in the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, playing first violin. By 1971, he moved to the position of Co-leader, and continued this until 1974. During this time, Ashley performed as a soloist and was a member of the Oriel String Quartet.

Ashley's interest in youth music has been evident for many years. He was Senior Violin Teacher at Perth Modern School from 1972-74, and during this time, taught violin, conducted the orchestra, organised music camps, and taught class music. He also arranged music and set up the Orchestra's Music Library.

In the mid 70s, Ashley travelled overseas, and became Co-leader of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. Whilst in London he completed advanced violin studies. He played in recording sessions and toured the UK, Europe and the USA with the Orchestra. He performed as a soloist in the Bach Double Violin Concerto.

In 1977, Ashley returned to Perth to rejoin the West Australian Symphony Orchestra as Co-leader and Member of the Auditions Committee. He also played more solo roles.

From 1981 to 1990 Ashley was with the London Symphony Orchestra as Co-leader, after which he was the WASO Concertmaster, until 1998.

Ashley has continued his professional activities since 1998 playing, conducting, organising, arranging and composing music for various artists and concerts.
