About WAYS
Western Australian Youth Strings was established in 1989 for the purpose of providing an opportunity for Western Australian primary school string students to develop their musical talent within a strings orchestra.
Members are Year 5 to 7 students drawn from a variety of primary schools throughout the metropolitan region. Depending on the quality of applicants, the orchestra has up to 50 members. For many members, WAYS is their first orchestral group. Click here to find out about membership.
The Orchestra is under the musical direction of internationally renowned Mr Ashley Arbuckle. It strives for music education and fun, whilst delivering a repertoire of both classical and contemporary music. Under the direction of Mr Arbuckle, student members focus on the key disciplines necessary to successfully play within an orchestra.
WAYS offers the opportunity to play before large audiences. The Orchestra performs at least five times a year, including at Government House.
WAYS provides a great pathway to further orchestral and musical opportunities. It has developed an enviable reputation over many years. Many members of WAYS have achieved music and academic scholarships to schools such as Churchlands Senior High School, Perth Modern and many of Perths private schools.
Rehearsals are held in the Churchlands Senior High School auditorium on Wednesday evenings between 4:15pm and 6:15pm.
